Texas Dem-led city approves $2 million contract to bus migrants to other towns, seeks federal payback

A Texas Democrat-led city approved a $2 million dollar contract with a charter bus company to transport migrants to other cities.

The contract between El Paso, Texas and Gogo Charters LLC was approved by the El Paso city council on Monday by a 3-1 vote, and the private company will “transport migrants to other cities as needed,” according to WETM.

According to the report, the city bordering Mexico has already driven more than 550 migrants out of the city by a charter bus company. City-run buses have taken migrants to bus stations, airports and area shelters.

However, according to reports, the number of people released from federal immigration detention has increased significantly over the past week as hundreds of Venezuelan immigrants who cannot be expelled from the country under Title 42 and who have a US sponsor are not.

The $2 million will be spent over 16 months, and the city is expecting reimbursement from the Biden administration.

City manager Tony Gonzalez called the situation an “emergency” and said that there is simply no money for these types of situations.

Gonzalez said, “It’s an emergency. We don’t have money set aside for these special circumstances. You’re giving us the ability to spend up to $2 million with this company, just what we’re authorized with this particular company.” Huh.”

According to the report, the city council also extended an emergency ordinance that was imposed to address the needs of migrants.

“We knew we had to pay for things that were not within our charter. […] So we wanted you to approve the ordinance that would give us the ability to do things like processing/reception centers, paying for food and water, paying for hotels, paying for transportation, Gonzalez said. The cost of doing so, many thousands of dollars. And when you get into three, four, five charters per day, it adds up.”

The report also said that El Paso has sent 25 charter buses since August 23, and said five more buses would be sent on Monday.

White House press secretary Carin Jean-Pierre on Thursday rebuked Republican Governor Greg Abbott as well as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for sending migrants to other states across the country.

Abbott sent two buses carrying 100 migrants to a location near Vice President Kamala Harris’ residence at the Naval Observatory in Washington DC on Thursday morning. on Wednesday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Sent two planes full of illegal immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard.

The Biden White House has yet to criticize El Paso.
