Tennis season is here, and everyone from pros to amateurs are flocking to the outdoor courts for a match — or for a #ootd pic. (Oh, we see you, content creators). Lately, though, tennis style has been making its way off the court and inspiring all of us to dress the part.
You’d think after a few years of lounging in sweatpants, we’d be ready to say goodbye to athleisure, but Spring 2022 has seen activewear kicked up a notch. Designers are presenting ultra-stylish tennis-inspired pieces for play and work, from Bottega Veneta to Dior to last week’s Chanel Cruise show in Monte Carlo. (Now I need a double-C tennis racket, complete with a matching black-and-white leather case.)
The trend has been trickling down to the fashion market, too, offering shoppers (demi-) performance tennis capsule collections. Michael Kors has teamed up with luxe Italian sports label Ellesse for a capsule collection hitting stores today (May 9). It features a modern take on ’70s athletic styles with track jackets, joggers, hoodies, shorts, runners and more. Meanwhile, Parisian brand Casablanca, known for reimagining the après-sport aesthetic, recently collaborated with Italian jewelery house Bulgari on a tennis-inspired capsule collection.
Whether you’re thinking about picking up a racket, already have your court times booked or just want to look the part, read on for the coolest tennis style pieces to serve up on and / or off the courts.
The tote bag
Carry your practice gear (and post-match essentials) in this roomy tote bag from Kate Spade’s new tennis collection. The printed PVC tote features faux-saffiano leather lining and includes a detachable tennis-ball-shaped pouch to store your smaller items. It’ll look perfect sitting court-side or brunch table-side.
The warm-up sweater
This striped pullover is an easy layer to throw on if you’re running to an early-morning practice, and with its polished polo collar, it also makes for a stylish piece to pair with wide-leg jeans and ballet flats if you’re heading into the office.
The tennis skirt
Available in nine colors and prints (and a choice of two lengths), this Leylah Fernandez – approved tennis skirt is ideal for the court and for running as well. It’s made of super-lightweight and quick-drying material to keep up with your rallies and has dual pockets to hold your phone or tennis balls. And when you meet your girlfriends for patio drinks after practice, it doubles as a cute mini.
Keep the top of your head cool and breezy while making sure the sun stays out of your eyes with this adjustable cotton visor. The interior mesh sweatband also means you don’t have to worry about wiping off the sweat after every point.
The sports bra
We love a performance-meets-style piece: This preppy collared sports bra doubles as a crop top with high-waisted pants. Made with Alo’s much-loved breathable and sculpting Airbrush fabric, it features four-way stretch and moisture wicking material, which allows you to play hard without worrying about feeling drenched, and the racerback style allows for ample arm movement for those killer serves.
The tennis sneakers
You know how we feel about versatile white sneakers at The Kit. They look stylish with everyday outfits, but these Nike court-ready sneakers are designed to move you around the court with ease. With the brand’s Zoom Air technology, these shoes act like a springboard, helping you stay stable and light on your feet. Molded rubber gives durability, a padded collar provides comfort and breathable fabric helps your feet stay cool and fresh as you ace your matches.
The little white dress
Look like a pro on the courts in this criss-cross-back white dress from Lacoste. With its quick-dry jacquard material, soft shoulder straps and integrated shorts made of compressive fabric, this one-piece serves up comfort and flexibility. Style it with a denim jacket for “rest” days.
The tennis socks
Channel Beyoncé’s Oscar 2022 opening performance color scheme — a tribute to Venus and Serena Williams — with these Balenciaga cotton-blend socks. It’s the easiest way to add a pop of tennis-ball green to any outfit.
The retro shorts
Inspired by the iconic athletic styles of the ’70s, these Michael Kors x Ellesse shorts in the signature Ellesse red and orange palette look match-ready. But with soft organic-cotton-blend fabric and a stretchy waistband, they’ll also be ideal for lounging in the cottage or the pool all summer long.
The champion-approved tank top
You know you’ll be looking and playing like a pro in this minimalist ribbed tank from Venus Williams’s own label. Available in Wimbledon-ready white, this top is made from a breathable, moisture-wicking fabric suitable for any grand slam.
The pleated black skirt
If you’re not partial to the classic all-white color scheme, this Adidas black pleated tennis skirt is equally timeless. Made with recycled and moisture-wicking material, this A-line skirt discreetly features the brand’s floating three stripes, as well as integrated shorts, so you can dive after the ball without worry.
The phone bag
This Bulgari x Casablanca collab collection elevates classic tennis bags. This mini bag is made with perforated calf leather accented by smooth grass-green sides, and Bulgari’s serpenti head motif serves as the clasp. It’s the perfect size to carry your phone, a couple of cards and your keys to and from the court — or the bar.
The polo dress
Although it’s questionable whether this cotton tennis-style dress is performance-ready, you’ll certainly look the part when you wear it out to lunch or dinner. With its piped collar and sleeves, slim-fitting design and ribbed fabric, people will assume you just hit the courts without breaking a sweat.
