The Queen’s jewelry box is still open.
Queen Elizabeth II was known for her signature pearls, and Queen consorts Camilla, Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle and others paid tribute to her this week by wearing pearl jewelry – including pieces from the late monarch.
Photographed on her way to Buckingham Palace to receive Queen Elizabeth’s coffin on Tuesday, Middleton wore a triple-strand pearl necklace that resembled the Queen’s jewelry collection, along with Her Majesty’s. There was a pair of diamond and pearl earrings.
Wearing a long-sleeved black dress with her hair in loose curls, the Princess of Wales looked gloomy as she traveled to the palace with husband Prince William, 40, for an emotional evening.
While it’s impossible to say whether the necklace was one of the Queen’s own pieces, Middleton has never been seen in a similar design. Her sparkling earrings, however, were a long-term loan from Her Majesty that she wore frequently.
In addition to paying tribute to the late Elizabeth – who died on September 8, 2022 at the age of 96 – pearls are traditionally worn during times of royal mourning.
UK jeweler Steven Stone’s Maxwell Stone told Page Six Style: “The royal tradition of wearing pearls for mourning dates back to Queen Victoria, who was so overwhelmed with grief after the death of Prince Albert that she wore black for the rest of her life.” Wearing nothing but that.” ,
“Sometimes, her black outfit was broken up with jewelry—though it was always black, colorless, or pearl,” he says, adding that the emperor had a special brooch to honor Albert as well as his daughter, Princess Alice. Which had a jet black pendant. and single white pearls.
“The pearls were thought to represent tears—the establishment of a tradition that has lasted to this day,” says the jewelry expert.
Today, members of the royal family followed the coffin on foot as it traveled from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall, where Queen Elizabeth will remain in state until her funeral on Monday.
Middleton, who traveled by car with 75-year-old Camilla to the back of the procession, wore a new black coat from Katherine Walker and a camouflage hat with her grandmother’s sartorial pearl jewelry.
According to Lauren Keehna of The Court Jeweller, she sported Queen Elizabeth’s pearl-and-diamond-leaf brooch, another long-term loan from the Queen to Middleton. While the Queen rarely wears it, the Princess of Wales has donned the sparkling piece on several occasions since her first outing in 2017, the royal jewelry expert said.
Middleton also paid tribute to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, by choosing her Collingwood pearl earrings.
Camilla, on the other hand, opted for one of her frequently worn four-strand pearl chokers with a diamond clasp, paired with pearl-and-diamond drop earrings.
Meanwhile, Meghan Markle, who rode with Sophie, Countess of Wessex, wore a black Givenchy coat she had previously sported and pearl-and-diamond earrings that adorned the Queen’s throne after marrying Prince Harry. There was a gift from him.
More pearls are expected to be seen from the royal family at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, which will take place on Monday, September 19 at Westminster Abbey.
