Richmond Officer Seara Burton passes away five weeks after being shot during traffic stop

RICHMOND – Sera Burton, 9, a Richmond police officer who was shot in the line of duty, has died, according to Richmond Police Chief Michael Britt.

The Police Department announced late Sunday that Officer Ciara Burton died at 9:59 p.m. at Reed Health, surrounded by her family, after she succumbed to her injuries on August 10.

According to Richmond Police Chief Michael Britt, final arrangements are pending.

Officer Ciara Burton was shot during a traffic stop on August 10.

According to police, other officers present at the spot opened fire and the suspect fled on foot. After a brief foot chase, the suspect was apprehended and treated for gunshot wounds by officers. He was later taken to Miami Valley Hospital and remained there until he was discharged last week. He was then held in the Montgomery County Jail.

Burton was seriously injured by the bullet. After spending three weeks in a Miami Valley hospital, Burton’s injuries were described as “irreversible” and he was taken off life support on September 1. He was taken to a hospice in Richmond on 3 September.

On Monday morning, Dayton police lined up at the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office on West Third Street, where the body of Richmond 9 Officer Sera Burton was taken shortly after she passed away.

This afternoon a procession for Richmond Officer Ciara Burton is scheduled to leave from Dayton for Richmond, Indiana.

At 1:30 p.m., the escort is ready to depart and head north along Interstate 75 from Dayton and west along Interstate 70 to Richmond.
