CLEVELAND, Ohio — Whatever Perrian Winfrey did for the Browns on the defensive, it was enough for Kevin Stefansky to sell him for Sunday’s home opener against the Jets.
It hurt for the player to be embraced by Brown’s fans and could not wait to play in front of Doug Pound.
Winfrey, Oklahoma’s fourth-round pick out, was also excluded from Friday’s practice for disciplinary reasons, but Stefanski declined to provide details or say whether he would miss the game.
Winfrey’s mentor, Miles Garrett, however, was not shy about explaining what the rookie should do.
“We all have to step up and say something, but sometimes silence speaks louder than words,” Garrett said on Friday. “And we’ve used our voice a couple of times and at the end of the day, he’s going to have to learn how to be a pro and Kevin took it into his own hands and he thought it was the right thing to do and I was going to be my coach.” I am completely behind the tasks.”

Garrett noted that Winfrey’s missteps were “quite common sense. And it was easy to see. It wasn’t like we had to bring it to his attention. His actions were very clear.”
This was the second time Stefanski had put a player down for disciplinary reasons. Last season, he benched rookie security Richard LeCount for a Steelers game on Halloween after some indiscretion.
A red flag went up last week when Winfrey played only five snaps in a 26-24 win over the Panthers, but he counted one of them. On play after fellow rookie Alex Wright batted a Baker Mayfield pass, Winfrey slid down one in the next play to bring third and 10. Grant Delpitt took it from there, picking up Mayfield on the next play. Karim Hunt takes a 1 yard touchdown catch of Jacobi Brissette.
It’s a short week away, but Winfrey could make her home debut against the Steelers on Thursday night.
rt jack conklin idle second straight week
Conklin was inactive for the second straight week as he continued to return from surgery to repair a torn patellar tendon in December.
The thinking is that it would have been tough for Conklin to come back after four days and play against the Steelers on Thursday night at FirstEnergy Stadium.
But if he feels fine by then—and it could come down to another gametime decision—Conklin will begin his season on national television.
Conklin had a gametime decision and spent time pregame testing his injured knee before making the decision. He suffered a knee injury last season during his loss to Baltimore on Sunday night.
D’Ernest Johnson inactive for second straight week
Johnson was among those inactive for the second week in a row.
The others are quarterback Kellen Mondt, receiver Michael Woods II, safety Richard LeCount and offensive tackle Chris Hubbard.
