The British media, and Meghan Markle’s usual chorus of critics, faced a shocking new reality on Monday: the Duchess of Sussex gave a candid speech about a charity she leads. Nobody was trashed. There was no criticism of the Queen, Charles or the royals in general.

Meghan, back in the UK with her husband Prince Harry for the cold-shoulder by the suddenly very busy Queen, was the keynote speaker at the One Young World conference in Manchester, England.

Tina Brown: Princess Diana would not have been a ‘great fan’ of Meghan Markle

The charity says it is focused on “empowering and developing young leaders to build a fair, sustainable future for all”.

Meghan, dressed in a stunning red Valentino dress, began her speech by saying: “It’s great to be back in the UK and it’s great to be back with all of you at One Young World.”

Referring to an earlier passionate speech by Sir Bob Geldof – about the vicious and selfish cynicism of dictators, and the fight against authoritarianism for true social justice and change – Meghan said: “As you have seen several times this week You will hear, and as we just heard, you will hear all kinds of things; some very heavy, some very uplifting. But I believe the wonderful feeling you will hear is that you are the future.

“But I would like to add to that, that you are also present. You are the one who is making the positive and necessary change needed around the world at this very moment, and for that I am very grateful to be in your company today.

The speech was lengthy on progressive sentiment, the general emphasis of which would be unlikely to come as a big surprise to those who have subscribed to Meghan’s chart-topping Spotify podcast. Word Clouds will likely pick up terms such as “representation,” “inclusion,” “global community” and “future.”

This was preceded by long periods of sitting on stage with Prince Harry and a random assortment of supporters of the charity. These included smaller names such as “Partner in Clifford Chance” and KPMG’s “Head of Social and Governance”.

So, rather oddly, that was almost exactly the sort of thing official royals are forced to endure day after day — albeit with the addition of Meghan’s extra-American-actor’s language to her smooth, glossy speech. , smiley sheen is given.

The classic, mind-numbingly dull, had all the elements of a royal gig: Harry and Meghan clapped for eternity as the flags of 195 countries were paraded in front of them. The band played God Save the Queen (though it probably did so intelligently, before the cameras came on Harry and Meghan). And what could be more establishment than Geldof’s act of dismantling the Anglophone political elite?

Unfortunately for Meghan, however, the media are interested in far more than her message.

In SundayMeghan’s speech was criticized by editor-in-chief Ingrid Seward glory magazine, which said: “I can’t imagine or understand how 2,000 young people understood a word about what she was talking about. It didn’t make sense. It was all about her and everything belonged to herself. I don’t think she knew what she was talking about. It was just ‘me, me, me’ and praising myself.”

Some blame the tabloid press for being fascinated by gossip and subtlety for the boycott of Megan’s cause. Today’s objects of attraction are: Meghan and Harry catch the train to Manchester! William and Harry aren’t going to see each other during their trip to the UK, despite (probably) being able to see the smoke coming out of each other’s chimneys!

But it’s worth noting that the celebratory pile of the Windsor feud has been stinked back by none other than Meghan, in her interview with deduction There is a very deliberate distribution of chum in the water.

Criticizing the royals—”By simply existing, we were disturbing the dynamics of the hierarchy,”—and quietly threatening to say more about life in a gold cage piqued the public’s appetite for scandal. (Even so, of course, freeing Nelson Mandela in media interviews breaks the golden rule of not equating one’s marriage, though it may not be such a thought-provoking bit of catnip scattering.)

With Harry’s memoir imminent—and the fact that the family is avoiding him because the contents and tone of the said memoir remain unknown—the couple is better known to the family—and media-assault modes such as polite speech. The one Meghan delivered in Manchester just now compared to giving.

So, it’s no surprise that you can hear the crowd wondering, “Is she going to say anything about the royals?” Her life “changed drastically” when Meghan began referring to her “husband” and married him.

And then you could feel the air going out of the balloon when it revealed the significant change she was referring to… a change in her “worldview” being a baby.

Meghan has fed us a diet of gossip and scandal for two solid years. Surely she would have been stunned if she had used the charity event to air her grievances with the royals, or once again went through the events of that controversial bridesmaid fitting.

However, Monday’s speech raises questions about which version of Meghan the media and public want. After urging her to do good deeds and not trash the royals, complaining to the media when she does exactly that is wrong.

But the truth is that when she throws her words around to save the world, she’s going to make some arrangements with the public’s interest in mind – not least because in England, when they see the pheasant in the sky. If you’re not too busy to fly, this is what the royals do.
