Kyvan Thibodaux doesn’t use his injured right leg to kick Thaddeus Moss while he is down.
Speaking to reporters for the first time since a cut block by Moss, which ended Thibodaux’s preseason and left him with an MCL sprain in his knee on August 21, Giants rookie Pas Rusher was asked if he thought the then The Bengals tight end made a dirty game – as has been heavily debated in NFL circles.
“I try not to think about the past,” Thibodaux said, after he spoke with Moss. “I’m not really worried about it. We’re trying to move on, trying to get better. Make sure you play with good technique. This is football – a 100 percent injury rate.”
Thibodaux was a limited participant in individual drills during Tuesday’s practice, backpedaling and working on hand-to-hand combat with fellow injured pass-rusher Aziz Ozulari. Hall of Famer Randy Moss’s son Moss was hacked by the Bengals on Monday.
Thibodaux’s availability for Sunday against the Titans still looks like a long shot, especially if the Giants take precautions to develop a first-round draft pick.
“Right now it’s day-to-day — could go either way. We’re just waiting to see where he is when the time comes,” Thibodaux said. “I’m doing much better — continuing rehab. I just want to be able to practice. If you don’t practice, you don’t play.”
As Thibodaux lay on the field, the worst-case scenario of a torn ACL came to the fore. But he left without the aid of a nearby car.
“I sat there, I was in pain for a minute, but [God] gave me the strength to get up and walk,” Thibodaux said. “I didn’t seem to be going crazy. I have to go out like G.”
Within minutes of the initial scare, Thibodaux had an initial diagnosis that provided peace of mind and he was joking with teammates, making a mouth-opening surprised face that became a viral meme.
“It wasn’t really a sigh [of relief], My knee hurt – don’t get me wrong. But things happen. Bounce back,” Thibodaux said before explaining what the teammates were telling at that moment. “I looked at him. He looked at him. Next thing I know, I took his eyes off him and he cut me off.”
If Thibodaux and Ojullari are both out, the Giants will replace Oshane Zimines and Jihad Ward as outside linebackers.
“We’re both under pressure to get back because we both love the game,” Thibodaux said. “But this is the NFL. We have a room full of people who can get things done. We’re supporting them and doing everything we can to get better.”
According to the team, WR Darius Slayton was exempted from practice. The two-time team leader is listed as the seventh receiver in receiving yards (2019-20)—only third on the team-unofficial depth chart.
The first depth chart of the season listed ILB Austin Calitro (who last debuted in 2019) as a starter next to Tae Crowder in base defense, filling the spot opened by Blake Martinez’s surprise release .
Ben Bredesson is listed as the starting left guard in place of the injured Shane Lemieux.
For both of those places, head coach Brian Dabol said he has a good idea of who the starter will be, but he wants a week’s worth of competition.
WR CJ Board – who had made 15 catches, three punt returns and 13 kickoff returns in the last two seasons with the Giants – was released from the practice squad.
