The Duchess of Cambridge, 40, debuted a new hairstyle on Wednesday with her three children – Prince George, 9, Princess Charlotte, 7 and Prince Louis, 4 – at their new school orientation day. She appears to have taken off some of the length and added more layers, in addition to a few touchy-feely highlights.

Earlier this summer, Kate’s hair reached the middle of her back, with subtle layers for movement and volume.

While Kate is known for her long brunette tresses, which are often styled in bouncy blowouts or chic updos, this isn’t the first time she’s tried different hairstyles. In addition to experimenting with cheek-sweeping bangs and blonde highlights over the years, she opted for a shoulder-length cut in the summer of 2017 after anonymously donating seven inches of hair to a charity called the Little Princess Trust. The Herefordshire-based organization makes wigs from real hair and donates them to children who have lost their hair through chemotherapy or radiation treatments.

“It’s nice to think that someone, somewhere – maybe more than one person – has received a wig with Princess Kate’s hair,” charity spokeswoman Helen Kreis previously told PEOPLE. “It’s a really cute idea and it’s fantastic for raising awareness, plus it’s gorgeous hair – we all lust after that hair!”

Kate herself has also tried her hand at hairstyling. During a 2021 video call with fellow parents, the royal mom opened up about taking on a number of new roles amid the coronavirus pandemic, with her three children less than thrilled.

“As parents, we have elements in our day-to-day being parents, but I feel, during the lockdown we have had to play additional roles that others in our communities or our lives may have helped us, ” He said . “I have become a hairdresser in this lockdown, so much for my kids.”
