Having an intimacy coordinator on set has become increasingly common knowledge in Hollywood, but the idea of having a mediator present for scenes involving sex, nudity, and similar sensitive acts is still fairly new. so new, in fact, that Some older actors have reacted negatively to the idea, including game of Thrones‘ Sean Bean, Joe argued Intimacy coordinators “spoil the spontaneity” of a scene.
in a new interview with time limitMiriam Lucia, The intimacy coordinator Feather dragon house, tried to clear up some misconceptions about the job for Bean. He praised her as an artist, but added, “I think she’s a person of a certain age, who’s been in this industry for a very long time, and doesn’t feel the other way around. Or maybe That she’s had a bad experience working with an intimacy coordinator. I’ll just say that in my experience so far, I don’t think it gets in the way of the creative process.”
She continued, “I think it helps to enable the creative process, because I think once you’ve worked out what the actors are comfortable with in terms of touch and consent, and what movement is going to happen. So you add emotion to it. And then you find freedom, because you don’t scramble and fumble and try to find it right there and then in that moment.”
Lucia, who is an actor as well as a coach, said, ,I think of spontaneity as what we do as actors. We have to pretend we’ve never done this before. We have to suggest that everything is spontaneous. You have a script, so you don’t come out with these words spontaneously. You have to work on it so that it seems to be spontaneous. That’s not what I mean here, what he said.”
Lucia, however, was generous in noting that she understands “why she said that,” particularly because being an intimacy coordinator is “a new task on set.” Elsewhere in the interview, she explains further in her process, “[Often] My work is already done behind the scenes, talking to directors, producers, actors, even lawyers, if necessary, in terms of exemptions and things that need to happen. and if there’s a problem or a change, or something becomes physically uncomfortableOr mentally uneasy, we shift it, but at that point, the work is largely done, and hopefully uninterrupted. ,
The entire talk is a fascinating insight into the emerging role of a professional who has worked on a wide range of presentations, including industry, Navarro, white Lotus‘ second season, and upcoming feature Emerald Fennell saltburn, If you, like Sean Bean, are a little unclear about why an intimacy coordinator is useful, watch the interview for yourself.
