Netflix Ryan Grantham in an episode of riverdale
Actor Ryan Grantham was sentenced to life in prison for shooting his mother to death.
Grantham, known for his role in diary of a cowardly child and presence riverdale, He was convicted of second-degree murder for the murder of his mother, Barbara White, in March 2020.
The 24-year-old was sentenced on Wednesday to life imprisonment at the British Columbia Supreme Court in Vancouver. He will not be eligible for parole for 14 years, Canada’s CBC reports.
According to the outlet, Justice Kathleen Kerr said the statements of the victim’s loved ones, such as Grantham’s sister, showed the “life-shattering” impact of the tragedy. He said the actor’s “saving grace” was that he knew enough about everything he did and was not on a spree.

Speaking about Grantham’s mental health issues, Kerr said she was having difficulties and watching violent footage on the dark web weeks before the actor pulled the trigger.
According to the CBC, Kerr said he was being treated in prison and showing improvement.
The child actor’s lawyer, Chris Johnson, told CTV that the sentencing of Grantham did not come as a shock.

“I think he guessed what the judge gave him as punishment,” Johnson said. “I think he’s very apprehensive about the whole thing. He’s a fairly small person, and to go into the prison system, I’m sure it’s a difficult and scary thought for him.”
Kerr also referred to Grantham’s “lesser” size and said she would not recommend him go to a maximum security prison.
Grantham was 21 when he shot his mother in the head while playing the piano.

After the March 31, 2020 assassination, Grantham reportedly planned to kill Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He loaded his car with three guns, ammunition, 12 Molotov cocktails, camping supplies and a map with directions to Rideau Cottage, where Trudeau lived with his family, the CBC reported at the time.
Grantham never arrived at Trudeau’s residence, and instead went to Vancouver Police Headquarters to replace himself.
As CBC reports, Crown Prosecutor Michaela Donnelly cited two psychiatric reports that showed the actor was going through an “acute period of clinical depression” in the months leading up to the crime.

According to the CBC, reports also showed that Grantham was “seeking violence and urges to kill himself.” The CBC said reports said that Grantham decided to kill his mother “to prevent her from seeing the violence she intended to commit.”
Complex reported that Grantham’s sister, Lisa Grantham, found her mother on April 1. Lisa shared a victim impact statement with the court, saying that her mother, who was battling cancer, was her “best friend.”
“She was weak and Ryan didn’t give her any chance to defend herself. I was saddened to learn that he was a threat to her life,” she said, according to Complex. Both she and her mother’s sister told the court that they “fear her release from prison.”
