The Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) of 2011 between the NFL and its players’ union dramatically changed how teams ran their practices. Rule changes include limiting the number of off-season practices, eliminating two-day practices during training camp, and imposing a limit on full-contact practices during the season.
Although these changes were made in an effort to improve the health and safety of the player, they can have the opposite effect.
There have been a significant number of injuries in the early weeks of the recent season. Some of this can be attributed to poor conditioning or a lack of preparation to withstand the forces required for professional football. Many of them are soft-tissue injuries.
Soft tissue is more adaptable to change and stress in conditions of less force and longer duration – neither of which is a normal condition during professional football games. Once regular weather stiffness begins, soft tissue that is not properly conditioned to the high forces that are placed on it can become damaged.
These types of injuries have had an impact on the Kansas City Chiefs at the start of the 2022 campaign. Let’s take a closer look at the players scored by the two marquee players.
Cornerback Trent McDuffie
Moving into Week 2, the rookie corner was placed on the reserve/injured reserve list after suffering a hamstring strain during the team’s 44–21 win over the Arizona Cardinals. He will be eligible to return after the team has played four matches.
Strains are usually classified on a scale of I to III (gentle To severe with full tears) However, it is important to remember that All Strains involve tears of soft tissue in some way. Given that McDuffie has already been placed on IR, we can infer that stress was more significant – either grade II or III.

As we are now in the first two weeks after injury, McDuffie and his athletic trainer are working on speed, inflammation control and pain management through the use of an underwater treadmill and/or a stationary bicycle. Depending on the severity of the injury, stretching and strengthening may also occur in the early stages.
In the coming weeks, remarkable reinforcement progress will be made to prepare McDuffie for his return. Without getting closer to the situation, it’s hard to know a forecast for him to return to the team for the Week 6 game against the Buffalo Bills, which is the earliest date where he could be returned from the IR. Depending on rehab progress, it is possible that McDuffie may not return to the field until late October or early November.

Even against the Cardinals, Butker suffered a classic lateral ankle sprain.
The most common type of ankle sprain, it is accompanied by a forceful reversal of the ankle, which causes damage to the structures on the outside of the ankle. With his ankle taped for better stability, Butker was able to return to the game and (surprisingly) kick a one-step 54-yard field goal – although after the kick, his gait was painful. The fact that he was able to return to the field to kick – when the chiefs were leading – indicates a mild sprain.
However, the complicated recovery is that the ankle in question is the butcher’s ‘plant’ leg. Additional stability is required, as forces applied through that ankle space increase stress on already injured ligaments. Barring setbacks in his rehab, it is likely that Butker will return to the field in the next week or two – especially given the 10-day mini-buy. The chief appeared to have escaped in a relatively short week. At the press conference after his game, head coach Andy Reid admitted injuries to defensive end Mike Danna (calf strain) and wide receivers Mecole Hardman (ankle), Marquez Valdés-Scantling (glute), and Justin Watson (shoulder). He called them all minors.
From watching the game, it appears that Harderman’s injury may have been most significant based on the mechanism of the high ankle upon landing – but he was able to return to the game as well. Like Butker, all of these players will have more time to recover in the long week leading up to the Week 3 Indianapolis Colts game; There should be no major concern for them to miss the game time.
These injuries sustained during the 2022 youth season have been a challenge for the Chiefs – but so far, the team has been successful. Other players have shown the depth of the team. Security Justin Reid (and Amendola) successfully filled in for Butker, while Jaylen Watson began her youth career for McDuffie.
